The 4th June seemed a bit early in the summer for an outdoor gig, but as the date drew closer I kept checking the weather forecast and although during the week there had been heavy rain, the Saturday dawned fine and occasionally sunny. This show was raising money for The Forces Children's Trust (Tony is a Patron of this charity) and Bodmin Rotary Club (There are pictures of the day on this site). It was fairly local for me - only 65 miles away. The whole day started at 3 pm with the Bodmin School Jazz Band, I arrived about 4 pm with Sharon and met up with Sarah who was there with her hubby and daughter, just catching the end of the performance by the school jazz band. They were followed by The Denny Wise Big Band, they had X-Factor contestant Gary Priestley as a singer who was reasonably good. At 5 pm there was a display by a RAF Hawk Jet, unfortunately most of this was behind trees, so I didn't see much of it. A local singer Paul Michael was up next - he looked like he could be Alexi Sayle's cousin. He had a bit of a strange choice of song, but didn't watch him much as we noticed 'The Horny Boys' Dave, Dan and Simon had arrived and were at the bar, so took a detour to the bar and had a chat with Simon. A young rock band from Ivybridge called Burn were up next, they were good, but I thought the drummer would learn a thing or two by watching John Keeble. A young local singer Tamsin Clark was next, her choice of songs didn't really suit her voice. The Denny Wise Band were back on again and along with Gary Priestley they also had Carmen Cussack who has previously appeared with Tony at Bolton last year when he appeared at 'The Big Light On' James Bond concert. Falklands veteran Simon Weston was there and the compare for the day was David Fitzgerald, anyone who has been to the south west may remember him from TSW Television doing birthday requests with the rabbit puppet Gus Honeybun. Tony arrived whilst Tamsin was on and we spoke to him through the fence and gave him a couple of belated birthday presents. The weather made it a bit cold to be waiting round all day, but we stood up by the barrier when they were arranging the stage for Tony to come on. I got a space in the middle at the front alongside Alison from Cheshire who had managed to extend her half term week in Cornwall with her family to an extra day and was driving back after seeing Tony. Tony's girlfriend Alison came up to me to say hello to me at this point before sitting down on the grass a little way away to watch the show. Tony came on stage at about 8.30 pm and the band consisted of Dave, Dan and Simon (The Horny Boys), Phil Williams, Richie B, John Keeble and a lady keyboard player (she was introduced, I have forgotten her name, but I remember her from Broadlands last summer). The set was as the set list except that I don't think he sang 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' but he did sing both 'Hey Jealousy' and 'Delilah'. Tony was in a good mood and was really enjoying the show although he did complain how far the audience was from the stage, I think he would have preferred us to be closer. It was a good set but as usual it was over too soon. No stage door at outdoor gigs but we did get into the backstage car park and waited. Spoke to John Keeble and got him to sign the HNK DVD and he said 'oh its out then'. He was in a good mood too. He also signed a drumstick that Sarah's daughter had. had a chat with Richie B as well. Tony came out after this and spent quite a while chatting. A good, if cold day was had by all. By the time we came to leave the car park, Sarah's and my car were the only ones left and there was no lighting and we had difficulties finding the gate out! Not too bad drive home and fairly quick too, the rain which had been threatening all day arrived then. Denise 6/6/05 |
