Last Friday, The Chester Music Festival presented former Spandau Ballet singer Tony Hadley at the Civic Hall Ellesmere Port.
Spandau Ballet split in 1990 and Tony, 47 went on to carve himself a successful solo career. He tells me it was at school that the idea to form a band came about. While in Germany a friend spotted Spandau Ballet written on a toilet wall, and the rest, as they say is history.
The hall was nearly full to see Tony, who put in a first class performance perform new and old songs. As well as rock and roll, we were treated to a few swing numbers from his album 'Passing Strangers'. He exchanged a bit of banter with the enthusiastic audience - many dancing in front of the stage.
With him on stage was former Spandau Ballet drummer John Keeble. Other band members were Richard Barrett, lead guitar, Phil Williams, bass guitar and Phil Taylor on the keyboard.
The backing vocalist was Andrea Grant, who performed a duet with Tony, singing the Elvis Presley song 'Suspicious Minds'. At the end there was the usual shout of more, after he had gone off. Tony and the band obliged, finishing off with two more numbers including the Spandau Ballet hit 'Gold'.
