I'd been wanting to go to Tony's Golf Classic for Action Medical Research since I first saw it on Denise's site a year ago. Peterborough is only a good two hours away by train and I eventually managed to get the day of work. Fridays are our busiest day but it's my first one since Christmas so I didn't feel too guilty!
I decided to come down to Peterborough on Thursday night so I wasn't in a rush onFriday morning. I got a taxi from the hotel but unfortunately the driver wasn't quite sure where the golf course was so we went on a bit longer journey than we should have! The taxi driver was really nice and although I said it was ok, he insisted on charging me less than the meter said. That's the first time that's ever happened! lol I arrived at the Golf Day quite early but missed Tony opening events, that was a bit too early to manage! I met up with Jules and Jeanette and later Gema, Wendyand Tina. It was lovely to see old friends again and along with others, there were quite a few fans there.
Tony arrived at the golf course again around 12.30 pm and posed for a few press photos before tee-ing off around 1 pm. The local paper took a photo of us fans with Tony, which was nice. We weren't actually allowed to follow Tony round the golf course but could see the holes that were the nearest. Tony's first shot went a bit off course but I think he played ok. I don't think he gets much time to practise with his busy schedule. Tony's team were called 'The Gold Flyers', we knew Gold would be in there somewhere!
After we wished Tony good luck, we went to sit on the terrace overlooking the golf course. We were so lucky with the day, it was beautiful and sunny. It was raining back home in Yorkshire and I had brought my rain gear with me. Never thought of packing the sun cream! We had lunch and afterwards some friends of Tony's chatted to us. They were very entertaining throughout the day and also told us the fantastic news that Tony and John are going to be on Celebrity Millionaire later this month. They also told us how much they won and we were all for going down the bookies!! lol
Other celebrities at the golf day included Geoffrey Hughes from Heartbeat and a Barron Knight along with footballers and other sportsmen. Think Rick Wakeman was there too but I didn't see him. Tony arrived at the half-way point, which was near us. It must have been very hot for him playing out there and I never realized how long a golf course was until now. This was the first time I'd been to one. It's one of the many great things been a Tony fan that you get to go to places and events you wouldn't normally. It was a beautiful course in a lovely part of the country.
After a few hours, we spotted Tony on the home run. Closer inspection showed he had a glass of wine in his hand, soo Tony! Think he deserved it too, must have been hard work out there in the sun. We gave him a round of applause and a big cheer, then made our way to have a quick chat before going home. Tony was lovely as always and I told him I thought he had given an amazing performance on Elvis Mania. As we were about to leave Tony, there was a crash and one of his friends, complete with golf clubs, had fallen into a bush! Tony said something I can't repeat on here and went to help him. It was so funny seeing Tony fish his mates golf clubs out of the bush. Hope he doesn't mind me mentioning that but it was so memorable!
It had been a lovely day, rounded off by meeting Tony again. Thanks to Gema for driving me back to the station, that was a great help. I had to wait a little while for my train as there were delays caused by a lightening strike in Stevenage. The rain was just starting in Peterborough, it was great it held off until the golf was finished.
