I'd seen the Simply Swing Ball announced on the Action Medical Research Website but initially it didn't mention that Tony would be doing some of the entertainment, but I was pretty sure that he would be. Soon I heard he would be and I decided to book my place, especially as it was my birthday.
A birthday party at the Hilton in Park Lane, what could be better and with Tony singing too. I knew there would be excellent food and I wasn't disappointed. Starter was Stardust salmon logs with a mustard and citrus dressing, main course was Beef Tenderloin with foie gras and morels with melted leeks and croquettes followed by Casino Royal dessert, coffee and chocolates. Although I did find the chocolate Casino Royal desert very rich and couldn't finish it. This was a good thing because the next thing I knew two waiters were bringing me a birthday cake with candles and an indoor firework on it that Tina had arranged for me, it was such a surprise and I'd like to thank her here. Wine was also included and we'd had coctails as we came in. The Jiving Lindi Hoppers danced during the meal.
There was a good turn out of celebrities and they included Ainsley Harriot, Roger Black,
Bobby Davro, Zoe Ball, Bobby Davro, Pete Cox, Richard Drummie and Ian Waite from Strictly Come Dancing. Roger Black was in charge of the Auction, but unfortunately there was nothing I could afford in it, but the lots made plenty of money for the charity.
The Fabba Girls were the first musical entertainment, this was the second time I have seen them as they were at the gig that Tony did at the Jazz Cafe in 2005. They are excellent Abba tribute act. Bobby Davro came on stage between the Fabba Girls and Tony and he made some jokes about the audience down at the front. Time for Tony and the excellent Swing band and Paul Moran to come on stage. The set list has 18 songs on it, but there wasn't really enough time to sing all those songs and it was cut back by six songs, but as a last minute thing at the end Tony decided to sing 'Its Not Unusal' as an encore. Bobby Davro also joined him for two songs, I was surprised how good a singer he is (not as good as Tony but still pretty good) and also managed to fit in a couple of joke too.
It was a bit strange standing and dancing in our ball gowns to the big band sound, but lovely to hear Tony singing the type of music that so suits his voice.
The evening had gone by so fast and I couldn't believe it when I looked at my watch and it was 1am and time for the evening and my birthday celebrations to finish. Tony didn't hang around long as he and Alison wanted to get home to Toni who was babysitting her half sister. It was 2am before we left the Hilton to go to our nearby hotel.
