A weekend of Tony, I couldn't wait. After the excellent gig at Lingfield, it would be an early start and a trip down the M4 to the Tortworth Court Hotel, just off the M5, north of Bristol. We were due to arrive arround 11.30 am and after an easy trip down the M4/M5 we turned off the motorway, to be confronted with a 'road closed' sign. We followed the diversion signs, which soon ran out. Luckilly I was able to find another route and ended up down country lanes with grass growing in the middle of them, but at the end of a road, there suddenly was the Tortworth Court Hotel. I was so relieved.
It was a lovely hotel and we made our way to the pre-lunch reception in the Atrium. There was no sign of Tony and we found out that he was running late and hadn't arrived yet. Soon it was time to go into the main dining room and for the proceedings to start. Sally Challoner, from BBC local TV was the host and they also had a woman toastmaster. There was a prize draw and a raffle for two tickets to New York. It was then time for lunch.
Lunch was:
Roasted Loin of Lamb with Olive Oil and Rosemary Potatoes and Redcurrant and Port Sauce with carrots and brocolli.
Profiteroles with a Duo of Chocolate Sauces.
Between courses we had a floristry demonstration by Sorori Florists, it was very good. As lunch was finishing, Tony arrived and everyone went outside into the sunshine whilst Tony soundchecked. We also celebrated Sarah's birthday with some cake.
After the soundcheck, it was back inside for Tony's performance. It was only a PA and no band, but Tony was very good. I didn't write down the set of songs he sang, but it definitely included, True, Gold and Barricades, plus I think Memphis and That's Life, plus a couple of other songs.
Tony had a very stressful journey to the hotel and he asked my friend how we had got there so easily and on time, maybe we should have given him a lift! as we had come in more or less the same direction.
It was great to catch up with friends and have a great day, celebrate Sarah's birthday, have lunch at a lovely hotel and see Tony.
