Any show that comes up, I always look at the logistics of going. I enjoyed going to New York when I went there in 2009 when Tony's shows there were cancelled. This year I didn't have a summer holiday booked, so a trip to America sounded like a good idea to me. I travelled out the week before the show. My youngest daughter came with me on the trip and to make it not just New York sight seeing, we decided to spend three days in New Jersey going to Six Flags Great Adventure. My daughter loves rollercoasters, the scarier, the better and this theme park ticked all the boxes. I mostly had a relaxing time waiting for her to return .... It also gave me a chance to refresh my driving on the other side of the road, although American cars being automatic, I didn't have any trying to change gear with the door handle, but I did keep trying to park the car in the corner of the parking space as they were much larger. We then moved into New York City and checked into another hotel and started the sightseeing part of our trip and did all the usual sights including bus tours, river cruise, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Top of the Rock, Times Square etc and also a bit of shopping. I saw this soft toy guitar in Toys R Us in Times Square and I thought it was very apt. Time to go to the show, I decided that I could get a subway train to pretty near the show, but I got confused at Times Square Subway Station and took the wrong train. It took me to the correct street but too many blocks away. There was nothing I could do about it and I walked to the venue. I got there around 7.20 pm, knowing that Tony would be on stage sometime after 8 pm, at that point there were only a few people in the venue, so I was able to take my place near the front. I'd arranged with Terry, Tony's biggest fan in America to meet her at the show. She got delayed coming into New York so I did look a bit like 'Billy no mates', but I didn't mind and as long as I didn't speak, I blended in nicely. I spoke to Tony's manager Matt as he came through the venue, I think this let the cat out of the bag to the people around me that I wasn't a local. I must have looked a bit strange keeping looking towards the door. Other people must have know what sort of time bands come on stage at the Irving Plaza as at the start of the show, the venue had filled up nicely. I'd been in contact with Terry by text and the show had just started when Terry arrived, She came and joined me near the front. There weren't really any surprises with the set list apart from Chant No 1, but even that song was a posibility as he had been asked in an interview whether it would be on the set list and Tony obliged by putting it on the set list. I had wondered if 'New York, New York' would have been on the set list, but unfortunately it wasn't. I think possibly the reason it wasn't included is that I've only heard Tony singing it at an event without the band. |

A song that was included was a song off Tony's forthcoming new album 'My Imagination'. I'd not heard it before, but I thought it was good and I liked it. I look forward to hearing it again. One of my favourite covers by Tony - 'With or Without You' was included, this was a great rendition and it went down very well. The whole show went down really well with the New York audience and Tony, John, Phil, Phil and Richie did a brilliant show. Terry got to meet Tony and I was so happy that she did this and enjoyed the show, her first time of seeing Tony live in 26 years. It was good to meet up with her and share this experience with her. |
