I hadn't realised quite how close to Wendy's house Sandown Park was, as after a 30 minute drive we were there. I'd got us Grandstand tickets as that was where the stage was set up, so we would have a good chance of getting near the front. We had our picnic tea with friends we met up with and soon it was time for the racing to start. Unlike previous times I have been to a gig and racing I hadn't got any racing tips from a friend of my husband and I was hopeless at picking any winners and only got one third.
After a couple of races, people started getting their spaces in front of the stage and putting their picnic blankets down and sitting on them. At the end of the fourth race we decided to join them and picked a spot near the middle. When the people stood up and picked up their picnic blankets everyone moved forward and we got to a very respectable 2nd/3rd row.
It had been a lovely warm day and I'm sure that increased the amount of people who decided to come. The sun was setting to a beautiful red when the show began and Tony mentioned this. There were two large screens either side of the stage, but there was no video wall behind the band. From where we were stood, we could just about see the screens and the initial bit of film from the tour was shown at the beginning.
I was able to get the set list after the show (thanks Jay) and there were 16 songs sung. Song 8 was Always in the back of my mind, a song that was introduced on the European leg of the tour. Song 9 should have been With the Pride and I don't know why it wasn't done - maybe someone forgot to pack the chairs or it was cut because the racing had over run.
Tony seemed to be really enjoying himself and was running about the stage, for someone who had turned 50 the day before he was looking good and singing really well.
Too soon it was over and as there were so many cars trying to leave the car park, we decided to wait and spoke to Tony before we said goodbye to friends and made our way home. An excellent evening made better by the good weather.
