This
Ball was announced on the official site, but it didn't give any contact
details, we managed to find out where to get tickets from and Tina,
Wendy and myself got tickets. It was a fundraising event for
cricketer Dougie Brown's Benefit Year held in the function room at the
Botanical Gardens in Birmingham. A four course meal was part of
the event.
We arrived a little bit early, but didn't see when Tony arrived. It was then time to go into the main room for the meal. We were on a table with some young cricketers and their partners. Tony was on another table with Dougie Brown and his family and some other people.
Tony was first up for the entertainment, he was singing to a backing track and sang Lifeline, Only When You Leave, True, Gold, Through The Barricades and Always on My Mind. He was excellent as usual, even though he was suffering from a heavy cold. One of the cricketers on our table had told us that Tony wasn't going to be singing as he had laryngitis, but luckily he was only joking.
Too soon Tony's set was over and they had an auction and raffle. The band for the evening came on - they were Buddy Holly and The Cricketers, they played Buddy Holly songs and other sixties songs. Tony came back on later in the evening and sang three songs with them including Drive My Car. Most people got up and danced to this band.
It
was an excellent evening and we got to talk to Tony on a few occasions.
I gave him his Astrological Chart which was more accurate because I had
asked him for his time of birth at Butlins (and he had phoned his mum up to
ask!). He was very interested in the character traits that it
mentioned and said a lot of it rang true about himself. He also
mentioned that he only had three tracks left to put the vocals down on his
Jazz-Swing album. I'm really looking forward to hearing that album.
